What is Single-Page Application (SPA)?
Single-Page Application (SPA) is a web application architecture in which all content of the entire application is presented on a single page. Gmail is a good example, where users can view different emails, reply and compose emails on the same page without refreshing or reloading the page. When a user views a new email, the application only needs to dynamically load and display the required new data, rather than loading an entire new page.
The success of SPA is mainly due to the continuous evolution of front-end technologies. For example, AJAX can dynamically load data, and React applications can be combined with React Router (front-end routing tool) to internally redirect pages within the application without reloading the entire page, and dynamically change the displayed content.
Advantages of SPA:
Better user experience:
SPA provides a smoother and faster web experience because it does not need to reload the entire page for each request. This can make the website look more like a native app, thereby enhancing the user experience.
Front-end and back-end separation:
In SPA, the front-end is mainly responsible for page rendering and interaction, while the back-end is responsible for providing data and APIs. If SPA architecture is not used, traditional multi-page architectures will be used, and when users request new pages, the back-end will return the entire page. Therefore, this separation in SPA can make front-end and back-end development and maintenance more independent and can also improve website efficiency and reliability.
Disadvantages of SPA:
Poor SEO:
Because SPA has only one page, other data is rendered dynamically through JavaScript, so the search engine crawler cannot correctly index the content of the page, which affects the website's ranking.
Large JavaScript files:
SPA requires a large amount of JavaScript on the front-end to provide user interaction or load data. Also, as SPA applications become more complex, the required JavaScript files will also increase, which may cause slow loading of JavaScript files in SPA.
Solutions to SPA disadvantages:
In the previous sections, we understood the advantages and disadvantages of SPA. Although SPA can provide better user experience and front-end and back-end separation, it also has some disadvantages. SEO is poor, and JavaScript files are too large, which are common problems. In interviews, interviewers usually ask for solutions to these problems. Therefore, in this section, we will provide solutions to these two issues.
Firstly, let us look at the SEO problem of SPA. To solve this problem, we can use Server-side Rendering (SSR) or Server-side Rendering (SSR) + Client-side Rendering (CSR).
SSR can fully render the HTML page on the server and send it to the user, allowing the search engine to correctly index the content of the page, thereby improving the website's ranking. The combination of SSR + CSR can send the server-generated static HTML to the client for the first time, providing better SEO and faster page loading speed, and also providing pre-rendered pages. When more interaction and interaction are required later, CSR can be used to achieve this goal.
Secondly, let us look at the problem of large JavaScript files in SPA. To solve this problem, we can use lazy loading, code splitting, compression, and other technologies to reduce the size of JavaScript files or only load specific JavaScript files when needed. This can reduce the file size and improve page loading speed.
